Qualities of a Good Marathon Running Shoe

With so many running shoe brands out there, what makes a good running shoe? It is said the most important running gear is the shoe. You get it right and it will save you lots of energy and prevent you from injury.

These are the qualities of a good marathon running shoe

  1. Fit. A good shoe must fit your feet like a sock, no room to allow movement of the feet. But it should not be tight that you feel pressure.
  2. Cushioning. Running can be hard on feet and joints. Shoes should provide enough cushioning to absorb impact.
  3. Stability. A stable shoe controls motion in the ankle. At one time I bought a Nike and went running with it but I felt very uncomfortable running in it, when I checked it I discovered the heel was to high.
  4. Flexibility. The front of the shoe should flex enough to let the runner push off with the ball of the foot.
  5. Breathability. Shoes that dissipate sweat quickly keep feet cooler and reduce the risk of bacterial or fungal infection.

  6. Weight. The lighter the shoe, the better – as long as cushioning and stability don’t suffer.

How the Nike+Ipod Kit For Runners Work

When Nike+Ipod kit was introduced, Time magazine described it as the most elegant of high tech runner’s aids.

How The Nike+Ipod Kit works

The Nike+iPod Sport Kit links an in-shoe transmitter to an iPod Nano-connected receiver, so that all the facts and figures of a workout can be tracked and reviewed.

The kit relays activity from a shoe-based transmitter to a receiver dongle that plugs into the iPod Nano docking connector. (The unit is compatible, at present, with only the Nano versions of the iPod.)

Things that the Nike+Ipod Kit tracks for you

A sensor, transmitting at 2.4 GHz, detects a runner’s cadence, and a set of calibrating procedures makes a range of estimates–including time tracking, distance run, pace and calories burned–available in the iPod.

If you want some real-time feedback, a spoken alert can indicate milestones, such as lap splits or mileage, during the course of a workout. Basically, the Nano now plays host to a virtual trainer. Once your run is done, you can plug in to download the results to iTunes, where you can review performance history. By synchronizing the data on a companion Nike Web site, runners can set objectives and monitor their progress.

What is the weight of the transmitter? very very light, it won’t slow your run.

New Asics Gel Kinsei 2 Cures Foot Injury

One cure of a foot injury is to change your running shoes.

I was reading the blog of Bald Runner, a Philippine runner and this is what he said about his experience with the Asics Gel Kinsei 2.

“I bought an ASICS Gel-Kinsei 2 running shoes after looking for some cure to the pain on the rear end of my right foot. After using it for my running workouts the pain on the rear end of my right foot slowly disappeared”

Cure for Painful Feet While Running

I don’t think it was the Asics Gel Kinsei 2 that cured his foot injury. I remember at one time I used to feel pain on my feet while running, the pain disappeared when I started running with new running shoes. Painful feet while running is mostly caused by worn out running shoes. A new running shoe is the best medicine.

Facts About the Asics Gel Kinsei 2 by bald runner

  1. It is the “heaviest” running shoes of ASICS and it advisable to use this only on your running workouts and not for road races.
  2. This is the most expensive running shoes of ASICS and with its price, you can buy two (2) pairs of an average-priced ASICS shoes or NIKE
  3. It is a very noisy shoe, according to bald runner when you step on the road it makes noisy sounds.

5 Simple Causes of Running Injuries

Due to its high-impact nature,  injuries are part of running. Marathoners run on hard streets. The impact of each stride is three to four times a runners body weight, transferred from ankles to knees to hips.

1. Body weight cause of running injury.

The heavier a runner, the higher the impact on the body. A runner who is overweight will experience extreme stress on the ankles, knees and hips.

2. Over training causes running injury.

Repetitive stress on the same tissues without enough time for recovery will cause injury.

3. Lack of rest causes running injuries

Rest is important because it allows your body to repair muscle tears  caused during running.

4.  Poor running technique causes running injury.

Watch out against a running method that causes twisting of the ankles.

5. Worn out running shoes causes running injuries.

Worn out running shoes are like a car with shock absorbers. Running shoes help to reduce the impact of running. Poor running shoes increases stress on your feet, ankles and knee.

Benefits of Wearing “Banned” Spira Running Shoe

Five years ago the USA Track and Field banned Spira Running shoe.

Benefits of Wearing Spira Running Shoe

The controversial shoe has a spring technology that is placed in the soles of the shoe. Spira’s patented WaveSpring technology reduces impact force on a runner’s body, which leads to an efficient recovery and less overall stress – signifying that the WaveSpring technology may be the most significant technical advancement achieved in the footwear industry in recent years. Spira’s shoes – and its WaveSpring technology – violates rule 143.3 (a) of the USA Track and Field which specifically bans springs in shoes for competition.

Do the Spira Shoe Boost Elite Runners Performance

“The shoes were super,” Said Anzhelika Averkova of the Ukraine after winning the 2007 Detroit Marathon.

Although most marathons have ignored the ban,  organisers of Boston Marathon have banned it. If I remember correctly one marathon runner at Beijing Olympic Marathon was wearing the banned shoe, I just can’t remember the name of the runner?

Hey – if you’re not aiming for a world record explore the Spira website, watch the video, read the reviews, and decide for yourself whether the technology’s worth taking a flyer on

New York Governor, David Paterson Finishes 15k Run

When Former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer was caught in a sex scandal, Runners world magazine posted a photo of the former governor dressed in New balance trainers, shorts and a T-shirt. The comments of the photo were the only positive reviews of Eliot at a time when Comedy writers were having a great time.

Gov. Spitzer responded just a few hours ago. He said, quote, ‘I violated my obligations to my family and I violated my sense of what is right and wrong.’ Spitzer also admitted violating someone named Amber.” –Conan O’Brien

Me to Syndrome

Sometimes politicians behave like kids, when their rival gets something they also want it.  Eliot’s replacement has also begun in his quest to have a picture of him posted on Runners world.

Last week New York Governor David Paterson finished the Utica Boilermaker Road Race in a little over 94 minutes. Although many governors have participated, Paterson is the first to finish the 15K run.

The governor, who is legally blind, said his biggest trouble was finding the time to train for the race after ascending to the state’s top job following Eliot Spitzer’s resignation in March.

An avid runner, Paterson ran the New York City Marathon in 1999 and finished in 6 hours and 6 minutes.

This year’s Boilermaker was won by Terefe Maregu of Ethiopia, finishing in 44 minutes and 17 seconds.

Steve Jobs : New Balance 992 Sneakers and Why He Never Quits

Steve Jobs is the CEO of Apple Inc, the makers of the Ipod, the music device that many runners cannot live without.

While many business executive wear suits, Jobs usually wears a black long-sleeved mock turtleneck made by St. Croix, Levis 501 blue jeans, and New Balance 992 sneakers.

Steve Jobs has led a dramatic life, a college drop out, he started a business at 20, at 30 he was sacked from the company he founded and in 1996 the prodical son returned back to to the company he founded.

Finding Your Love

In 2002 Steve Jobs spoke at graduation ceremony at Stanford University and reflected on what kept him going during challenging times “I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going is that I loved what I did. You’ve got to find what you love.” He continued to stress the importance of “finding something you love” and “following your own inner voice.”

When you are doing what you love you will never give up! This applies to relationship, business and running.

When To Stop Running With Worn Out Trainers

I have decided to stop my experiment of running on worn out trainers. I covered the experiment on my post on How to safely run on worn out trainers, risk and benefit.

Doing road Running on worn out trainers is painful to the feet and it increase the risk of suffering an injury. Despite knowing the risk involved I was trying to run in pain in attempt to build stronger legs. I thought the more I got used to the pain the stronger legs and better runner I would become.

My experiment was based on weight training principle, For a bodybuilder to build stronger and bigger muscles he has to shock his muscles with more pain.

After road running for three weeks in worn out trainers, my trainers have become so worn out such that I feel like am running barefoot. Although I posted how Ethiopian Abebe Bikila won 1960 Olympic Marathon running Barefoot, I don’t want to copy him.

Sign that you should buy new trainers

Yesterday morning I was forced to end my 10 K run midway. As soon as I started running my shoes felt light, a good sign that you should get a new pair of trainers, and after 2K of running I started feeling pain on my feet, I continued running I told myself the pain would go away. The pain kept increasing, starting on my feet, ankle and then my hip joints. By 5k my pace had slowed down and I just found myself walking.

That was the end of my experiment and now its the time to buy a new pair of trainers. Next week I will see whether the experiment really worked.
