Signs Of Heart Attack When Running Marathon

There have been a couple recent deaths in marathon races. In 2011 marathon deaths have been reported of a 35-year old in Chicago, 32 year old in San Antonio, 27 year old in Toronto, 32 year old in Montreal, and a 58 year old in savannah. These deaths are making some runners now worry about running long distance races?

I remember reading an article in NYT about this issue of runners dying from heart attack a few years ago. One of the conclusions was “The risk of dying on a marathon course is twice as high if you drive it than if you run it”.

Runners World magazine resident doctor wrote on this topic (Heart attacks) and he adviced all runners to look out for the following tale tell signs of an imminent heart attack when running.

Listen to your body and stop for chest pain or pressure; pain or pressure in your arm, neck, or jaw; skipping or irregular heart beat; or unusual breathlessness, loss of energy, or fatigue.

If you have an event, like blacking out or feeling dizzy while exercising or feeling your heart flutter or race, report it to your physician for evaluation. Also be aware that “heartburn” during exercise may not be from your stomach and can be your heart.

Recovery Drink After Running : Cherry Juice

Participating in long-distance endurance events, such as 26 miles marathon, causes a degree of muscle damage and inflammation for the runners. It takes several days to recover, the more experienced a runner the faster the speed of recovery.

Cherries help speedy recovery of marathon runners.

I have just read a scientific report that claims that athletes who drink the juice of Montmorency cherries recover faster after Marathon running.

Medicinal benefits of cherries

According to the scientist: –

The phytochemicals, in particular, anthocyanins found in Montmorency cherries have anti-inflammatory and antioxidating properties, which the research has shown to be effective in helping exercisers to recover from strenuous physical activity.

So, next time you finish that long run, instead of drinking plain water mix it up with Cherry juice.

Maasai are natural runners. Running long distances is in some ways a part of their culture and tradition. They’re used to heat and hills and to maintaining steady pace over long distance. They usually run in sandals made out of off-road tires. They call them “Michelins” or “Thousand Milers.” Photo of the a thousand milers maasai_warrior_tire_running_sandals_shoes

Linet Masai and How Honey Treats Stomach Cramps & Pain

After Kenyan Linet Masai Won 10,000 meters gold at IAAF world championship in Berlin Germany the leading daily in Kenya carried an Interview with the father.

The father, a runner in his childhood, took credit for the girls success urging the girl to start running early. He said he weaned her on honey to help reduce stomach upsets, especially while running the long distance to school.

Medicinal Wisdom from bygone Era

What was special about the honey? The 55 old man had an insightful revelation, he explained that the family lived near Mt. Elgon forest which has many indigenous trees, which have medicinal significance, and bees inside the forest suck nectar that contains the medicinal value. The honey harvested from the forest bees is used as medicine.

The community has traditionaly used honey to treat stomach upsets.

Traditional honey versus modern honey

From the old mans  explanation it is convincing why honey would be cure for stomach upset. But it is also clear the modern processed honey would not work because it is produced in a farm environment away from the indigenous trees with their medicinal value.

If you intend to use honey bought from supermarket to treat stomach pain, sorry, it wont work!!
