Arch Pain Running : Cause & Treatment

Arch pain when running is normally a symptom of a heel running injury. It could be a heel spur or a plantar fasciitis. To know which is which you will need to get a feel of your arch.

Cause of Arch Pain When running

The cause of the arch pain is because of  heel injury which is a common running injury. It is common because your heel is usually at the receiving end of all running impact. It is said the weight on the foot and heel when landing is four times your body weight.

Diagnosing Heel Injury

Heel Spurs – The pain is felt at the front part of your heel, where the arch and the heel meet.

Plantar Fasciitis – The pain is felt at the center of the heel. To diagnose plantr fasciitis press really hard with your thumb on the center of the heel. If the pain is felt at the center, it is indeed plantar fasciitis.

Supplements for Knee Joint Pain

Knee joint pain is a popular runners injury. Some of the treatment for knee joint pain are icing the knee joint, using an anti-inflammation spray and giving the joint maximum rest.

In addition to the three treatment methods above there is evidence that shows use of supplements can help in treatment of knee joint pain.

Popular Supplements for Knee Joint Pain.

  1. Glucosamine
  2. Chondroitin

A recent Internet poll at runnersworld.com showed that 94.5 percent of respondents said they had tried one of the supplements. What’s more, 79.8 percent reported that their symptoms “somewhat improved” or “greatly improved” after taking glucosamine and/or chondroitin. Less than one percent reported that “things got worse” with the supplements.

Glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate are the most common supplements used to treat knee osteoarthritis.

The two supplements can be purchased from a pharmacist or online.

Recovery Drink After Running : Cherry Juice

Participating in long-distance endurance events, such as 26 miles marathon, causes a degree of muscle damage and inflammation for the runners. It takes several days to recover, the more experienced a runner the faster the speed of recovery.

Cherries help speedy recovery of marathon runners.

I have just read a scientific report that claims that athletes who drink the juice of Montmorency cherries recover faster after Marathon running.

Medicinal benefits of cherries

According to the scientist: –

The phytochemicals, in particular, anthocyanins found in Montmorency cherries have anti-inflammatory and antioxidating properties, which the research has shown to be effective in helping exercisers to recover from strenuous physical activity.

So, next time you finish that long run, instead of drinking plain water mix it up with Cherry juice.

Left Knee Pain While Running : Cause & Treatment

I was reading the latest US president Barack Obama Health report, the doctors certified him “fit to rule” but one item that caught my knee was this one : Obama suffers from occasional pain in his left knee. Medics call it chronic tendinitis.

Left knee pain is a very common injury in people who run. I remember my first year of marathon training, the left knee pain dogged me right to the day of the race. I still remember turning up at the start line holding an anti inflammation gel on one hand and the other hand rubbing the gel on the knee.

Why Left knee and not right knee?

My guess as to why the left knee and not the right knee is affected has to do with the fact that majority of humans are right handed. We use the right leg to kick stuff around and that effort makes it stronger. On the other hand, the left leg is never used seriously, leaving it a weak partner. Have you heard of the statement “USE IT OR LOSE IT!”? It makes sense to me.

Cause of Left Knee pain while running

Apart from my theory of “neglected left knee” medics say the cause of knee pain is due to excessive training; running too much. Another cause is when you suddenly switch from running flat routes to running hilly routes.

Prevention of knee pain

I believe prevention is better than cure. One way to prevent a sudden attack of knee pain is switch your running speed gradually. A sudden change of pace will be a shock to the system leading to injury.

Four step Treatment of knee pain.

  1. Icing – The first line of treatment, sometimes this alone is enough to fix it!
  2. If the pain is too much take a pain killer
  3. Rest – take a break from running.
  4. Strength training exercise, see my video demonstration of how to strengthen your knees

If you don’t get well soon (one to two weeks), see your Doctor/ physician.

Stanchart Nairobi Marathon : Training Week 16

The last two weeks have been frustrating, a nagging achilles tendonitis had refused to heal.

It started as a small pain, I swiftly applied heat but it got bad then I tried an anti-inflammation cream, after one week the Achilles got worse, I was limping! I stopped the medication and tried Ice, although I knew I might be late, most experts think it is useless to use ice after 48 hours.

But the ice seemed to work because the pain started to go away. After two weeks of no running I got back to my love. Last week I did three days of running. On Wednesday, a 5 k run around a grass track, followed the next day by a 2K trail run inside a private ranch. I had hoped running on those soft surfaces would give me a soft landing but I was wrong. After the trail run I felt a bad reaction, my Achilles felt painful. I took a pain killer and took two days rest.

On Sunday everything felt fine, so I did a 16 K run on road. I ran most of the distance comfortably but I could feel a slight pain near the end. I finished the run without any serious reaction and am confident but hopeful the injury is behind me.

Stanchart Marathon Training Week 13 : My First Injury

Suffering injuries is part of the deal of choosing a running lifestyle.

The last week I suffered my first injury as I continue training for 2009 Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon. I have suffered an Achilles Tendonittis in other words it is an inflammation of the Achilles. For a good description look at the image below.

achillies-tendonitis injuryIf I was to take an x-ray of my leg it would look something like that.

Thanks to the injury I had to cancel one day of speed work and I have decided to cancel my weekly long run.

I have this nagging pain on the area, it is not serious and I could still run with the pain but I have decided to take precaution and avoid see it turn into something more serious. After all time is on my side, I started marathon training two months ago and I have made great progress and I still have two more months before the marathon. Start your training early and you will have time to treat inevitable injuries and get back to training.

What caused the Achilles Tendinitis.

I speculate it has something today with the changes in my training. The last two week I have been doing serious speed work and I guese the fast running was more than my body could handle.

Treatment of the Achilles tendinitis

A one week rest, wearing my sports shoes instead of my heavy boots to work, a few calf muscle strength exercise plus applying an anti-inflammation cream should heal the archilles tendonitis.
