Destination Marathons Europe

Europe provides fantastic destination races. If you enjoy destination races, here’s five destination marathons across europe I recommend:

Athens Greece Marathon

The attraction for this that you tell people you ran the original marathon route. Any hard core runner must consider Athens marathon has his top destination marathon. Athens Marathon takes place every November.

Paris Marathon.

With over 40,000 runners taking part, this has to be the most popular destination marathon. I believe it has to do with the fact Paris is the most popular travel destination and many runners schedule their Paris travel for the weekend of Paris marathon. Paris marathon takes place in November.

London Marathon.

The London Marathon is fun and relaxed, because of the large number of runners who do the race to raise money for charity. Entry is by lottery, so make sure to send in your application early. The London marathon takes place every April.

Rome Marathon

For those runners that love everything Italian, making Rome marathon your destination marathon would be the perfect way to enjoy Rome scenery while running. Rome marathon will takes place in March.

Rotterdam Marathon.

If you are looking for a flat course then this is it. The flat-fast course makes it perfect for any runner who aims to qualify for Boston marathon. Many runners report achieving new PR at Rotterdam marathon.

Hope you consider these as part of your destination races europe.

Oprah Winfrey Marathon Time : Marine Corps Marathon

“I want to beat Oprah!” That is the goal of many runners. Oprah Winfrey finished 1994 Marine Corps marathon in a time of 4 hrs,  29 mins, 15 Secs.

If Frank Shorter inspired the first (1970s) running boom across US, Oprah Winfrey inspired the second, by running the Marine Corps Marathon. If Oprah could run a marathon, shame on anyone who couldn’t.

How Oprah ruined the Marathon.

While race directors across US were happy to welcome the new generation of runners or is it marathon walkers, the hard core runners were not happy. Edward Mccleland writing for salon.com thinks :-

America’s competitive spirit has been wrecked by feel-good amateurs like Oprah whose only goal is to stagger across the finish line.

I totally agree with him! The marathon is a race, the goal should be to finish it and to finish as fast as you can.
