2010 New York City Marathon Photos & Pictures

It was another brilliant New York City marathon. A record 45,000 marathon runners took part. The photos & pictures are breath taking!

I followed the event on TV and as usual the TV cameras focused on the elite runners. To see what was happening in the “peoples” marathon you have to turn to the internet.

Best Running Advice For Runners

Looking at an elite athlete running you will be impressed by his/her ability to run at a high speed. They make it seem very easy! They can keep going at a level of effort that seems impossible to maintain.

But is it easy for the elite runners than it is for the regular Joe?

A New York Times article examined this issue and experts interviewed gave running  advise on How to Push Past the Pain, as the Champions Do.

Best Running Advice from the article

Even elite runners feel the pain the secret is that they push through the pain rather than stop or slow down.

On How to deal with pain when running?

  • Focus intensely on your running, don’t let your mind drift away because you start slowing down.
  • Athletes must resist the feeling that they are too tired and have to slow down. Instead, they have to concentrate on increasing the intensity of their effort.

To add my own idea on the subject

Don’t focus on your burning chest instead feel your legs. Every time I find myself slowing down I ask myself how my legs are feeling. Most times the answer is the legs are feeling strong. And I step up a gear.

Healthy Fats For Runners

Most articles I have read on fat intake claim that at least 20-35 percent of a runner’s diet should come from healthy fats.

During running, muscles rely on fats for energy after the all the carbs have been depleted. The difference between the elite runners and the casual runners is elite runners are good at utilising their fat stores as energy source.

When it comes to fats, their are good fats and bad fats.

Examples of Bad fats for runners

Saturated fats are bad fats, they are fats mainly found in animal products such as meat, dairy, eggs and seafood, which have been shown to contribute to health problems.

Example of good fats for runners

Cold-water fatty fish, canola and soybean oil, walnuts, flaxseeds and tofu are good sources of omega-3 fats, which have been linked to disease prevention.

Amounts of fats to consume

Remember at least 20-35 percent of a runner’s diet should come from healthy fats.

Music Makes You Run Faster : Benefit of Listening To Music While Running

Researchers are now reporting you can gain alot by listening to music in your Ipod / MP3 player while running.

From the BBC website

Dr Costas Karageorghis and Professor Peter Terry, sports psychologists from Brunel University West London and the University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba respectively found music increased energy efficiency by 1-3%, meaning athletes could run further on the same amount of oxygen.

The researchers further found women seemed to benefit more than men.

Maybe this new find explains why elite runners are banned from listening to Ipods while running.

Marathon Rules For Elite Runners

Marathon races have rules and regulation. The rules for elite runners are more stringent than for the casual runners.

The rules for elite runners became more clear after the debacle at 2009 Lakefront Marathon in Milwaukee. In that race three different ladies were declared winners.

The first winner was Cassie Pellar who was disqualified shortly after the race for accepting aid – a water bottle – from a friend outside of the official water stations. The second place finisher, Jennifer Goebel, then took the first place. After a few days, supporters of Cassie posted a photo of Jennifer, the race photos showed Goebel with an iPod tucked into the waistband of her shorts. Since running with an ipod is against the rules she was stripped off her first place.

The third place finisher Canitz, a green 42 year old runner was elevated to first place.I wonder what dirt they will now dig out about her??? she better have her taxes in order.

The Elite Marathon Rules

  • Don’t take water or food from spectators
  • Don’t listen to music during the race.
  • And this last one is so obvious, Don’t use dope
