Common Marathon Ailments

In a New York Times interview, Dr. Stuart Weiss, the medical director of the New York City Marathon, gave a list of the most common and potentially life-threatening marathon-associated ailments:

They are  “too hot,” “too cold,” “too dry,” “too wet” and “wobble and fall down” (heat stroke, hypothermia, dehydration, low blood sodium and collapse).

Water Drinking Tips During Half Marathon

Runners should ensure they consume / drink enough water during a half marathon. Adequate hydration is important for completing a half marathon successfully.

Pre Race Hydration Tips

Pre-race, don’t drink or do anything that could promote dehydration: these include drinking excess caffeine, alcohol or soaking yourself in a hot tub.

On the morning of the race make sure you drink atleast half a litre of water before the start of the race.

During the race itself dont indulge in unnecessary water drinking, too much water is dangerous! Take a drink only when you feel thirsty.

Stomach Pain : Stomach Problem : When Running : Cause & Treatment

Stomach problem when running affects all kind of runners, from the seasoned elite runner to the casual runner down the pack.Stomach problem is described as a pain in the stomach. Experts call this stomach cramps.

Personally my last marathon was run with a nagging stomach problem. The pain struck even before I hit the 10K mark. I ran the rest of 32Ks with an on and off pain, it was like going through hell. I still cant believe I managed a sub three hours finish. Maybe it was the desire to quickly get to the finish line and put the pain behind me that pushed me!

Causes of Stomach Pain.

Expert explanations are : –

  1. Dehydration
  2. Low salt levels.

These two are the known causes of stomach problem, but another less reported cause is fatigued stomach muscles.

Fatigued Stomach Muscles

Although most runners spend alot of time getting leg massage, few think of massaging stomach muscles. Running engages almost all the muscles in a runners body. The most used muscles are the leg muscles. The core muscles are also heavily  used. Runners should remember to massage the core muscles to keep them in good working condition. I solved my stomach problem when I started massaging the stomach muscles.

If you still suffer stomach problem despite taking enough water and licking salt blocks maybe you should consider massaging your tummy. It worked for me and it might work for you.

How to Get Kids To Drink More water

Drinking water is important for healthy development. But research shows that kids, by and large, simply don’t drink water, even if it’s readily available. Which means if not supervised, active kids are at a risk of dehydration.

In a group of studies in the 1990s, young athletes were brought in to a human performance laboratory in Canada and asked to complete intermittent, easy sessions of bicycling, while drinking as much water as they liked. During the 90 to 180 minute sessions, the “children dehydrated progressively and their core temperatures increased faster than in adults,” the researchers found.

Change the beverage, though, and children’s drinking behavior alters — dramatically. In the Canadian laboratory cycling study, when the kids were offered grape-flavored water, they voluntarily drank 44.5 percent more than when the water was unflavored.

The trick : give them flavoured water!

You dont have to buy expensive sports drinks. A flavoured drink can be water mixed with a fruit juice. The home made fruit juice made from natural fruits is better than the supermarket juices. Natural juices are more nutritious.

Blurred Vision While Running : Sarkozy Collapses Jogging

Am in my 8th week of training for 2009 Stanchart Nairobi Marathon. I had horrible experience yesterday during my weekend long run. I suffered a blurred vision while running, something that I have never experienced in my 3 years of marathon running.

The distance for the long run was 28 Ks and the blurred vision struck at around 22 K. I couldnt see properly beyond 20 metres, reading road signs and billboard advertisement 20 – 30 metres away was a problem. The only thing that kept me going was that I could see colours of cars coming my direction.

I suspected something was wrong at 20K mark when I touched my face and it felt dry and full of white particles. That was a sign of dehydration! A normal runner should be sweating water.

When the blurred vision struck I thought of stopping but with 5K to go I just kept running. The angel in my head was telling me stop but the demon in my heart was telling me keep going, what the hell the finish line is near. My body was feeling good, the leg muscles were fine. I jogged to the end.

When I got back to the house I drunk fluids, water and orange juice. Licked salt pallets. These made me feel 10% better. I rested for two hours and woke up feeling a headache. I tried to eat and found myself eating uncontrollably. It was after stuffing myself with food that I started feeling good again.

Sarkozy wasn’t so lucky

When I sat down to watch the evening news I heard French president Nikolas Sarkozy had collapsed while out jogging. That is when I realised how lucky I was.

I have been checking for information about what happened and I can confirm the blurred vision was a case of dehydration. I had not hydrated properly before the run and the weather was sunny and hot.I  was also wearing new Saucony running shoes and these gave me an incentive to run at a fast pace.

Dehydration increases the risk of heart attack because it increases heart rate. When you are dehydrated your blood thickens and the heart has to beat faster and harder to pump the blood. Blurred vision occurs when you reach heart beats of between 140 – 157 per minute.

Causes of Running Stomach Cramps, Pain

Every runner must have at one time experienced some unpleasant and painful sensation in the stomach. The pain is what is called cramps and its caused by the overexertion nature of running.

Stomach cramps and diarrhea

Stomach cramps vary from one runner to another, some runners complain of stomach cramps and diarrhoea others stomach cramps and diarrhea others just upper stomach cramps.

What causes painful stomach cramps during running?

  1. Dehydration. – For your smooth muscles of the stomach/intestines to function properly they require to be hydrated.
  2. Low blood salt – With all the sweating taking place your body will be losing too much salt and your body will soon be starved of salt.
  3. Inadequate oxygenation – During running, a lot of your blood will be redirected from the stomach to other muscle. And since your stomach muscles are starved of oxygen they will not work properly.

The above causes are made worse by factors such as a extreme weather conditions. Too high temperatures will increase rate of dehydration.

Medicine for stomach cramps.

This is not your typical medicine to cure cramps but a simple guide on how to avoid them. Its important to make sure you drink enough water. I experience most of my stomach cramps during my training because in training I don’t have water points every 2K like I find in a marathon.

Drinking water is good but drinking too much is dangerous! Drinking too much water will cause your salt levels too go too low causing you stomach pains and in a worst case scenario death! Every runner should remember to put enough salt in his food. During the the race, Eat salt pallets offered. Lastly, Practice good breathing technique.

Remember the more you run and the more experienced you get, the less stomach cramps you will get from running.
