Best Time of Day To Run : Best Time of Day To Exercise

According to a review by Dr Reilly of Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences at Liverpool John Moores University in England, it was noted that athletes’ best performances, including world records, were typically set in the late afternoon or early evening.

From that report we can conclude that the best time to get the best out of your exercise is to do your exercise later in the day.

In an interview by New York Times one of the researchers in that report said, they noticed that “Most components (strength, power, speed) of athletic performance are worst in the early hours of the morning,” Our good researcher never gave much reasons as to why this is so. My hypothesis is that it all has do with the fact that our bodies are warmed up later in the day unlike in the morning when they are cold.

Shortcut Routes at New York City Marathon

In a New York Times article it was reported that in 2008 NYC marathon 46 runners were disqualified for having taking a short cut to the finish line and an untold number of runners escape detection, marathon officials said.

Mary Wittenberg, the race director, called the number of cheats shocking.

Shortcuts methods at NYC marathon

According to the organisers the two most common form of cheating are

  1. Stepping off the course and rejoining it closer to the finish, often sneaking into Central Park once they enter Manhattan near Mile 16.
  2. Participants running with someone else bib. According to 2008 records, a 19-year-old in the field gave his bib to someone five years older, and that person posted the best time in the 18-19 division.

The biggest reason or motivation of taking a short cut is to secure a coveted qualification time for the Boston Marathon

Jenson Button London Triathlon Finish Time

Jenson Button tackled the 2009 London Triathlon. The formula one driver took advantage of the formula time out to join 6000 amateurs at the London triathlon.

Button raced through the Olympic distance – a 1500m swim, 40km bike ride and a 10km run – in a personal best time of two hours and seven minutes.

He did the 1500m swim in 24 minutes, the 40Km bike ride he covered in 1 hour 3 minutes and the 10K run in an impressive 35 minutes.

Comparing heart rates of triathletes  and Formula One drivers

This is what the F1 driver told the BBC

“I pushed myself to the limit in the triathlon and it is different to driving a car for a start my heart beat is a lot higher when I’m swimming and running.

Stanchart Marathon Training Week 12 : Time Out

Last week was a rest week.I took a one week rest from running. I had been running for four weeks non-stop and my last 28 K long run had been difficult than usually. I had struggle for breath during the last miles and I thought I needed to give my body a rest.

Sometimes you need to take a step backward to make two steps forward.

Rest and getting stronger

Taking a period of time out during a training program is good for your running. The rest period will give your body extra time to recover from the stress of running. Joint muscles are in constant action during running and the impact of road running leads to small tissue tears. A prolonged rest period will allow complete rest of joint muscles and total healing of the tissue tears. Once the body recovers you will be a stronger runner.

Best time to take an extra rest from running.

When you feel your run times are getting slower. Another indicator is if you feel your legs are getting heavier or you are struggling to breath, which is a sign of tired lungs.

Rest can be a stimulant

That one week of rest stimulated my appetite for running. I kept longing for the next run and feeling confident about it.
