Researchers are now reporting you can gain alot by listening to music in your Ipod / MP3 player while running.

From the BBC website

Dr Costas Karageorghis and Professor Peter Terry, sports psychologists from Brunel University West London and the University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba respectively found music increased energy efficiency by 1-3%, meaning athletes could run further on the same amount of oxygen.

The researchers further found women seemed to benefit more than men.

Maybe this new find explains why elite runners are banned from listening to Ipods while running.

I found this fascinating piece on the amount of weight to gained by a British football fan watching the 2010 Soccer World cup finals in South Africa.

Men’s Health magazine estimates a die-hard World Cup fan could gain 2st and 7lb (15.7kg) if they watch every game between 11 June and 11 July.

It bases this gain on the assumption that a British man watching a game with friends will drink, on average, four cans of lager and eat three slices of a pizza, half a bag of nacho chips and half a pot of dip – adding up to 1,913.5kcal. That’s two-thirds of the recommended daily calorie intake for men, and almost the entire daily intake for women.

In contrast, the energy expended while watching – even accounting for gesticulating, shouting and leaping to one’s feet every so often – is just 215.5kcals.

The moral of this is Playing football may be good for the health. Watching it, on the other hand, can pile on the pounds.

Human growth hormone is made naturally in the pituitary gland of humans, the gland is deep inside the brain just behind the eyes.

How To stimulate Human Growth hormone

Human growth hormone is secreted in short pulses during the first hours of sleep and after exercise. To ensure maximum stimulation, get quality sleep and engage in some form of physical exercise.

Although Human growth hormone is secreted naturally throughout life, some people suffer from human growth hormone deficiency. In this case they might need to inject HGH. It has been used to help stunted children in UK grow normaly since 1959.

From the bbc health website I found this list

Some of the most obvious weaknesses you see in runners and joggers are:

1. Bouncing up and down too much

2. Over striding

3. Not using their hamstrings enough

4. Landing on feet too heavily

5. Breaking action on landing

6. Not using arms

7. Twist midriff side to side while running

8. The head and upper body are bent forward

9. Jogging slower than you could walk!

Most joggers and runners are biomechanically inefficient because their running technique is poor.

They don’t use the necessary body parts efficiently so when they are supposed to be enjoying themselves they are instead suffering pain.

Jenson Button tackled the 2009 London Triathlon. The formula one driver took advantage of the formula time out to join 6000 amateurs at the London triathlon.

Button raced through the Olympic distance – a 1500m swim, 40km bike ride and a 10km run – in a personal best time of two hours and seven minutes.

He did the 1500m swim in 24 minutes, the 40Km bike ride he covered in 1 hour 3 minutes and the 10K run in an impressive 35 minutes.

Comparing heart rates of triathletes  and Formula One drivers

This is what the F1 driver told the BBC

“I pushed myself to the limit in the triathlon and it is different to driving a car for a start my heart beat is a lot higher when I’m swimming and running.

We know Jamaican Usain Bolt is faster than American Tyson.

A BBC article titled Why Bolt is special analyses the performance of Bolt and Gay at the 100 metres IAAf finals 2009 Berlin Germany.

According to the article Both athletes strides

Bolt needed 41 strides to win gold on Sunday while Tyson Gay, who claimed silver with a magnificent time of 9.71, took 44½ strides.

On How Tyson Gay can Beat Usain Bolt

The article adds If Gay is to challenge Bolt’s world record it would appear he needs to improve his stride length while maintaining his stride frequency – which is easier said than done when travelling upwards of 27mph.

Bolts biggest advantage is that he has legs longer than his fellow athletes, the Jamaican is 6.5fts, which means he has longer stride.

If Gay cannot run faster by improving his stride length then he may consider undergoing surgery to have longer legs? That may work!!!!
