They say, |”The early bird catches the worm” This is so true when it comes to getting a place to run in popular Paris marathon. To say this marathon is popular is understatement.  The race has 40,000 slots. Last year the race opened in September and it was all sold out by end of November.

The rule is first come first served.The key to getting your slot is booking early.  Registration for the 2013 race will begin or open between mid-September and early October.

If you are not successful, you can take the route of running for Charity. Charity organizations require you to raise a minimum amount of funds. The latest reports from 2012 London Games is Jamaican sprinter Yohan Blake is wearing a $500,000 wrist watch. This is not your usually Garmin GPS running watch but A custom, $500,000 watch made by designer Richard Mille. That price tag makes it the most expensive sports watch.

As reported by Britain’s TNT Magazine and a handful of other English sources, the watch, which you can see in the picture/photo below, is a customized sports watch in the green and yellow colorway of the Jamaican flag. Officially, the timepiece is called a Richard Mille Tourbillion watch, and the one-of-a-kind piece of functional jewelry was designed specifically for Blake to wear at the Games.

This half million dollar watch is already causing a stir. According to Yahoo news, the IOC is not happy. The watch is in violation of IOC rules that bar athletes from wearign gearing that is not part of national apparel.

Similarly, if athletes use a piece of equipment that isn’t strictly clothing, they are required to use the official sponsor of the Olympics in that category. Omega is the official watch of Olympics.

If the IOC decides to crack the whip on Blake, the guy could get a hefty penalty. I don’t think they will snatch his silver medal from 100m but they could slap him with a hefty fine.

Galen Rupp Training Tips & Secret

I was impressed by performance of Galen Rupp at 2012 London Olympics. It was not the silver medal that he won that caught my eye but that final dash he pulled to storm past the Kenyans and Ethiopians. My first reaction was,”this was his lucky day” but when I checked him up online I realised this was not just luck but a product of excellent training.

In 2012 July Issue of Running Times this was what the guy said.

“My 26.48 AR put me at number 16 on the world list. I’ve proven that I’m in the mix with guys like Bekele. Now it’s all about putting together the 54-second last lap I’m going to need to make the medal platform. Finishing fifth or sixth isn’t going to satisfy me. We’re after something bigger.”

Talk of confidence!!!

Two people have shaped this guy, Alberto Salazar and Mo Farah. Salazar is his running coach while Mo Farah is his training partner. Salazar has been coaching Rupp for nearly a decade and is the mastermind of his training program.

Training For the Olympics

Sports Illustrated had a training program on how Rupp and Mo Farah prepared for 2012 summer games.

On one day in France, roughly two weeks out from the 10k final, they did six 1,000-meter repeats at an average of 2:38 with just a 500-meter jog between repetitions, and then tacked on three 400-meter sprints in 52 seconds each, a workout made much more taxing by the thin air. Six days before the Games, they did an inverted ladder of three 600-meter sprints in an average of 1:36, 400 meters in 61 seconds, 300 meters in 44 seconds, 200 meters in 27 seconds and then a blazing 300 in 37 seconds flat, followed at the very end by an all-out 400 in 51 seconds. Just before leaving for London, Rupp ran a 100-meter sprint with a two-step running start in 11.03 seconds, his fastest ever. They were ready.

Salazar has also worked on the mental side of things. He has drilled into his head the importance of self belief. “You just believe when it gets to the end, whether it’s a fast race or a slow race, you’re going to outkick them. If you develop yourself to that point, the race becomes very simple. You don’t really even have to look at the clock.”

Having a Training Partner helps.

When Salazar brought Farah into their training group at the Nike Oregon Project in the winter of 2011, Rupp was sceptical. Trust me, Salazar said. Farah would be a good friend and a necessarily challenging partner. They would make each other better runners. Rupp came to see that Salazar was right.

This is what Rupp said immediately after winning silver at 2012 London Games “I’ve been able to train with the greatest distance runner in the world,” Rupp said afterward. “He’s been an unbelievable mentor to me.”

3,000m Champ, Ezekiel Kemboi Arrested

Kenya news outlets are reporting that Kenyan police have charged the world’s 3,000m steeplechase champion, Ezekiel Kemboi, with assault after a woman said he stabbed her on Wednesday night.

The woman alleges that the athlete attacked her when she declined his sexual advances.

Mr Kemboi denied the allegations, saying she colluded with thugs to rob him and was injured in the skirmish. The magistrate granted the athlete bail and said he would be allowed to travel to London to compete in the Olympics.

At least we can now look forward to Kemboi doing his victory dance in London.

Yogurt has bacteria, which replenishes the normal flora within the gastrointestinal tract so it’s healthy.

Lean Meat & Fish

If you’re going to eat meat, go for chicken, fish, and other lean meats—they’ll go down a lot easier than a juicy steak. This diet provide protein that you need to repair your body. During intense half marathon training your body gets tears and knocks. Eating protein helps t repair the body.

Whole Grains

Whole grains, such as whole-wheat bread, oats, and brown rice, are a good source of fiber, which helps digestion. Fiber also can help you feel full and lower cholesterol, but it can cause bloating, gas, and other problems in people who quickly ramp up their intake—it’s better to take it slow when consuming more. Don’t over indulge just before a race or a long run.

The foods that vegans like Scott Jurek avoid, like dairy products and eggs, are the easy ways to get protein in a plant-based diet, obviously. But you still have grains, nuts, soy. Eat enough of that and you’ll be fine. The one issue is vitamin B12, which is found only in meat; B12 is important for endurance athletes, since it affects red blood cell production. But many cereals and soy milks are fortified with B12 now, or you can take supplements.

Weight Maintenance For Vegan Runners

Favorite weight gain or weight maintenance advice is to drink juice. Grape juice, pomegranate juice, tart cherry juice. They have plenty of calories, and if you pick the right juice, especially pomegranate or tart cherry juice, it looks as if they can help with recovery. Tart cherry juice was a very popular topic at the recent American College of Sports Medicine meeting. It’s a potent beverage, in terms of speeding recovery. And it’s vegan.

Paul Tergat : Running To The Limit

The book revolves around 34-year-old Kenyan Paul Tergat. Who has secured his place in the history books with his Marathon world record in Berlin at the end of September 2003. Today he is considered as one of the best runners of all time. At Olympic Games he won two silver medals, both times behind his friend and rival Haile Gebrselassie.

This book illustrate Tergat’s way from an unknown runner in a tiny village in Kenya to the Marathon world record holder and Dollar-millionaire. Are Athletes Using Painkillers As Performance Enhancing Drugs

This week I have come across two articles that have cast a spot light on the use and abuse of pain medication in world of sports. The stories left me convinced painkillers in pro sports is a form of legal doping.

The first story is the tragic story of NHL player Derek Boogaard. The following intro from New York Times article is enough to shock you……

In his final three seasons playing in the National Hockey League, before dying last year at 28 of an accidental overdose of narcotic painkillers and alcohol, Derek Boogaard received more than 100 prescriptions for thousands of pills from more than a dozen team doctors Read the Rest of the story at NYT Times.

The story details how Derek sustained his short Career by relying on powerful painkillers and anti anxiety medications such as hydrocodone, oxycodone, xanax, Ambien and tramadol. The medications were prescribed to treat multiple injuries.

The next story was from BBC sports. FIFA is alarmed by rampant abuse of painkillers in soccer/football. Fifa’s chief medical officer has said the “abuse” of pain killers is putting the careers and long-term health of international footballers in jeopardy. The major factor in the growing use of painkillers in football is the pressure on team doctors to get injured players back on the pitch quickly.

Soccer players take pain killers as a preventive. They take them to prevent a pain which may occur, to be totally insensitive. The story also noted that n the United States, 12 former NFL players are now suing the league over the use of the powerful anti-inflammatory drug Toradol. They argue that the medication masked the pain of head injuries and led them to play on and suffer concussions as result.

As these stories show, the primary reason is to continue performing beyond your natural level. The smoking gun evidence that painkillers can be used to enhance performance was piece from BBC follow up article,

“It’s well known that Andreas Erm who won a bronze medal in the 50km walk in the 2003 world athletic championship in Paris received pain killers several times during the walk – can you tell me this is not performance enhancing?

“His body was not able to walk 50km on this day in such a speed but he won the bronze medal because he was treated with pain killing medications!” Read the rest of the story at BBC Science.

List of Kenya Marathon Team For 2012 London Olympics

Athletics federation of Kenya named six marathon runners to represent Kenya at 2012 London Olympics marathon. The picking of marathon runners has been a controversial issue because Kenya does not hold a marathon trial instead the selection is like election of the Pope. A secret committee meets in a back-room and decides. The criteria they use is anyones guess.

Kenya Mens Marathon Team 2012 Summer Games 

  1. Abel Kirui – A two time World Marathon Champion. The guy has never won a major marathon and has a PB of 2:05:04 but he seems to produce the goods when it comes to major Championships.
  2. Wilson Kipsang – He is the second fastest marathon runner in the world. He has won the Rotterdam Marathon plus he just won 2012 London marathon.
  3. Moses Mosop – He is the winner of 2011 Boston marathon and 2011 Chicago marathon.

Kenya Womens Marathon Team 2012 London Olympics.

  1. Mary Keitany – She has won the last two editions of London marathon. That alone was enough to guarantee her a place. I think she is so used to the London course and she may even run it blindfold.
  2. Edna Kiplagat – She took Gold at 2011 Daegu World Championships.
  3. Priscah Jeptoo – She was second at 2011 Daegu World Championships.

The major casualty was Patrick Makau, the 42Km World Record holder was left out after  he got a DNF at 2012 London marathon.
