Kenya, Beijing Olympic Marathon Team Announced

Despite all the domination in big marathons around the world, no Kenyan has won an Olympic marathon gold medal. The best performance remains Eric Wainaina’s silver in 2000 Sydney Olympics.

The Kenya Athletics federation announced the Kenya Marathon team for  Olympics games to be held in Beijing, China in August.

KENYA MEN OLYMPIC  MARATHON TEAM

Martin Lel : He has got lots of pace. Winner in London in 2003, 2007 and 2008, New York 2003 and 2007

Samuel Wanjiru: At 21 he is the future of marathon but I have my fear he might suffer burn out for his early start. World Half marathon record holder (58:33) Fakuoka Marathon winner 2007 and London marathon runner-up 2008

Robert Cheruiyot : This former barber is my bet for the Olympic Gold. Four time Boston marathon winner (2003, 2006, 2007 and 2008) Chicago marathon winner (2006 and 2007)

KENYA WOMEN  OLYMPIC MARATHON TEAM

Catherine Ndereba: Will it be second time lucky for the 2004 silver medalist, She has sacrificed everything for the Olympic, choosing not to run at any major marathon prior to Beijing Olympics. Will she emerge from the Shadow of Paula Radcliffe? She is a Four time winner in Boston world champion in 2003 and 2007

Selina Kosgei : Third in London marathon 2008

Martha Komu: 2008 Paris Marathon Winner

How the Selection for Kenya Olympic Team is Done

I have no idea how its done, The National Track Federation chooses the Olympic team based on an Amorphous criteria subject to all manner of interpretation and influence peddling. Critics of the federation have accused the federation of putting reputation, tribe, & friendship above individual form.

The beautiful thing about preparing for Olympic Games is you can enjoy dreaming. After announcing the team, the federation moved swiftly to dreamland ” We expect both marathon golds this year since we have picked the best runners we have. This year alone, Kenyans have won 25 marathon titles so selecting the team was not easy but we got the best,” The federation Chairman, Isaiah Kiplagat said.

I JUST CAME ACROSS THE BELOW CONTRIBUTION IN A REPUTABLE RUNNERS WEBSITES AND THOUGHT OF IT TO BE VERY INTERESTING SO I DECIDED TO FORWARD IT TO YOU GUYS AND SEE WHAT ALL TEAM-KENYA’S FANS HAVE TO SAY:-

I know AK officials and people like Martin keino are very active members of this website so being a fan of kenyan runners and a supporter of the kenyan team for beijing iam going to give you a few sugestions from myself and a few expirienced coaches which i believe could boost your chances:-

1)3000m steeplechase men team- Drop Richard Matelong and take Paul kipsiele koech.Matelong was ragged yesterday in paris granprix and does not look good for beijing.kemboi and Kipruto are fine but on the day Mubarak and shaheen will be psyched up and having koech in the team will be a plus.

2)800 women team:- Recall both jelimo and jepkosgei back home imidiately to prevent them from injury and tiredness .
jepkosgei’s confidence has been wrecked and it remains to be seen whether she can recover in time for beijing. Her coach bears most of the blame for having wrong strategy and plan for the athlete.

3)5000m men team:- Drop Longisiwa and take Ebuya .Longisiwa always performs well in trials but as soon as he jets out of kenya for a race ,he races like a shadow of himself.Ebuya is coming back to form and will peak soon.he was 2nd to soi in paris yesterday.

4)5000m women:- allow lucy kabuu to double up.Drop Cheruiyot,i gather from reliable sources that she is having some very personal problems that have been affecting her training and consistency and is not in the right state of mind to toe the line in beijing for kenya.she has the talent and ability to perform well in future but for now what she needs is for AK and Ricky Simms to support her through the rough patch.

feel free to critique my suggestions. All the best to team kenya 2008.

Kibet, thanks for your comment! I also believe our team preparation for beijing is being handled poorly. The team coach was quoted in the media saying the athletes participation in golden league is good as it will prepare them for Beijing. This thinking is so wrong, as you mentioned, two things can happen, they will either get an injury or get tired.

Last year Jepkosgei was the flavour of the year, This year Jelimo at a young age of 18 is the new kid on the block. Jelimo is repeating the same mistake Jepkosgei did, running at every meeting. Jepkosgei is now a shadow of her former self, struggling for pace.
