If you thought Boston qualifying times (3:05 for Men and 3:35 for women) were hard, you are in for some disappointment. Boston marathon organizers have introduced new Boston marathon qualifying times : Times have been lowered by as much as 20 minutes!
Although the official time has been lowered by 5 minutes. They have introduced a hybrid system that will reward faster runners.
This is how the new Boston marathon qualifying system works;
Runners who exceed the standards for their age and gender group by at least 20 minutes will be allowed to apply on the first two days, followed by those who surpassed the standard by 10 minutes, and followed on the fifth day by those who were five minutes faster than required.
If spots remain after the first week, any qualifying runner can apply.
This change of Boston qualifying times was necessitated by a shocking number of applications for 2011 Boston Marathon: The field of 27 000 filled up in eight hours, breaking the previous record of 65 days – by 64 days.
The organisers told Supersports website they don’t expect runners response to be that of “I give up” but “I am going to run faster.”
