Sources of Quercetin : Foods With Quercetin

Quercetin is an energy boosting supplement that was made famous by FRS Energy drink. The energy boosting drink was endorsed by Lance Armstrong and everyone in cycling and running community became curious on what was inside.

One of the ingredients inside FRS Energy drink is Quercetin. In a lab study, Quercetin was been shown to increase energy expenditure in rat which made some people to suspect it might have a similar effect on humans. Although FRS claims it works, many people disagree but some swear by it.

If you believe in it or want to give it a try, you can get it naturally or take the supplement.

Natural Sources of Quercetin

To get more quercetin you can increase your intake of the following foods that are thought to have quercetin: –

  • Apple skins
  • Onions,
  • Tea,
  • Red wine.
  • Leafy green vegetables
  • Berries
  • Herbs such as ginkgo and St. John’s wort

Quercetin Supplement

One advantage of buying a supplement is ;  Quercetin is available in higher amounts in dietary supplements than would typically be found in food sources. I guess you would need to eat a basket of Apples just to get the same amount of quercetin in a tablet.

Supplements are sold as capsules or tablets or in drink form like in the case of FRS energy drink.

A word of caution, before taking any supplement consult with your doctor.

Tips For Running Hills By Ryan Hall

In timeout magazine American Long distance runner Ryan Hall was asked on how he approaches hills

What’s your strategy for those Boston hills–and downhills?

My strategy for the hills in Boston are to run the same effort level whether I am going up, down or flat, which means I will obviously slow down going up the hills and fly down the back of them. I think that energy management is one of the keys to running a good marathon. The better I can keep it locked in at the right effort level, despite the terrain, the better I will run.

What’s your go-to, night-before-the-race meal?

Ryan Hall : Pasta, olive oil and Cytomax Muscle Milk Protein Shake.

Another interesting question from the interview was his answer on his strategy for Boston Marathon

What’s your strategy for those Boston hills–and downhills?

Ryan Hall : My strategy for the hills in Boston are to run the same effort level whether I am going up, down or flat, which means I will obviously slow down going up the hills and fly down the back of them. Nipples Bleeding When Running

Nipples bleeding when running is a common running problem among male runners. The bleeding happens when your running T-shirt rubs against your tender nipples.

This is how the bleeding happens

When you run your t-shirt moves up and down, that movement rubs on your nipples. The friction on your nipples makes them tender. Open wounds form and blood starts to flow out. When the salt from your sweat rubs on the open wounds you start feeling pain. Experts call this Nipple Chafing!

OUCH!!

How to Avoid Bleeding Nipples

  1. Apply a layer of vaseline over your Nipples, some marathons even offer Vaseline enroute.
  2. Put a bandage over the nipples. This will prevent direct contact.

Another funny solution that I found at a Runners world article on this topic was this one:

Here is an easy solution, although a slightly embarrassing one… wear a ladies sports bra. They hide easily under a t-shirt and stop the chafe! Go ahead and laugh it up… I’ll see you at the finish line… bloody nipple free!
